MAOPIA
This collage is created from a once common rural Chinese eye chart.
The hands were cut out, colored yellow, and placed between plexi-glass panes. The colorful background is a composite of several political posters including a poster promoting the Party’s One Child Policy. In the lower third, Chairman Mao, who was depicted on a famous postage stamp looking like the ‘Redeemer’—assuming the Mandate of Heaven, here descends from the mountaintop as Moses did with the Ten Commandments. A circle cut into the plexi-glass at the top holds a ceramic Mao button from Jingdezhen.
